TA for ENED 1100
During the fall semester of 2024, I was a Peer Teaching Assistant at the University of Cincinnati assisting in the class Engineering Principles in Design, or better known as ENED 1100. I was one of three TA's in my section, which was led by Professor Norman Novotney. My job was to help the students understand the material, connect with them as a peer, and grade their assignments. The students learned concepts ranging from spatial visualization to python programing and project management. Each semester, there is a larger project that teams of students must complete. This semester, the students needed to come up with an innovative way to help a specific group of people experiencing poverty. The students had some interesting ideas, and I was excited to help them in any way I could. Being a TA allowed me to use the things I had learned, both through classes and past experiences, to inform incoming students about what their time at UC might be like. I became a TA because I've been told in the past by my classmates that I am good at teaching concepts they could not understand from a lecture alone. I believe this is because I have a good idea of how myself and my fellow classmates think, so I am able to use this information to teach abstract and complex concepts to my peers. I also became a TA so that I could be a friend to the new students. I wanted to be someone other than the professor that they could look to for guidance, as well as someone they could approach informally and have meaningful conversations with. This is why the position is referred to as being a "Peer" TA, because students in this position are meant to be a peer to the students taking the class.
I thoroughly enjoyed this opportunity to help new students learn in ENED 1100, and I hope that I will have another opportunity to be a Peer TA in the future, whether it's for ENED 1100 or another class. This experience has strengthened my belief that to be a Global Citizen Scholar, one must be willing to teach their fellow Scholars, and to be a guide for future Global Citizen Scholars.
